On Monday, June 10th 2024, we left the school at 7:00 am by bus, and we arrived in Granville at around 8:00 am.
After passing through the customs, we went on the boat - we were very excited, though some of us were a little anxious.
Very soon, we were sick because of the high waves… It was funny for some pupils only, but for most of the group, it was a hard time !
We arrived in St Helier at 10:10, 20 minutes late. We needed some time to recover from the trip and we had a bite.
When we were ready, we left the harbour in groups, with the sun shining.

First, we headed towards the Language of Colour Promenade with 26 granite stones. On each stone, there is a letter of the alphabet and the morse code for it. For example, Delta for letter D, Echo for letter E, Alpha for letter A.

Then, we observed the statue on Liberation Square : on May 9th 1945, the Royal Navy and the British forces liberated Jersey from the German Occupation. The statute was made in 1995, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Jersey.

The 3rd place we went to was the Visitor Center. It is situated in the same place as the Jersey Museum. There, an archivist gave us some brochures of St Helier and Jersey, and then we left to join our friends.
At around 11:00 am, our group went to the Food Market : there, you can buy alcohol, local vegetables, local fruit, a lot of meat, pastries, flowers, jewels, books or even decoration items. Close to it, is the Fish Market. We could see some fish like wild bass, local bream, and some mackerels.
On the way to Howard Davis Park where we were having lunch, we went through a cemetery. There were tombs with inscriptions in English and French. It was not a well-kept place, because the grass wasn’t cut. The tombs are vertical only and you can jog in the cemetery, just like in a park.

At HD Park, we had lunch with all the groups, we sat on the grass to have our picnic. It was really sunny and good fun. We even saw some seagulls flying over us which stole some of our food !
After lunch, we went to Le Havre des Pas, which is a beautiful beach.
We climbed on the rocks first, Mrs Leroux was not really happy about it But it was fun ;-) ! After that, some of us bathed our feet in the sea, but the water was very cold. We took a lot of pictures of the place with a swimming-pool in the sea.
At the end of the end, we went back to the city center to interview some passers-by. For example, Lisa is an inhabitant of St Helier. She is 56 years-old and she doesn’t have a job. She asserts that the most popular sport in Jersey is sailing. She is English but she speaks a little French. We ended the day with an ice-cream made of Jersey cream, yummy !

We took the boat back to France at 6:15 pm Jersey local time (= 7:15 pm in France). This time, it was a great moment : the sea was calm and we could enjoy the waves and the view : some of us even saw some dolphins ;-) !

To conclude, it was a top trip, with a lot of fun and we could discover a bit of the British world in Jersey !
Thank you to the school for this trip, we will remember that special day !

Les 4C :

A day in Jersey

On Monday, June 10th, 2 classes of 8th grade students traveled to Jersey.
To start with, at 7:00 am, we took the coach to Granville for about 45 minutes. Axel was very late and his mother had to drive him directly to Granville ;-).
After the customs, we took the boat to St Helier, the capital of Jersey. Almost everyone was sick, even 3 teachers out of 5 adults !
Once arrived, everybody was tired and we needed some time to recover from the trip.

Then, we started the day by going to Liberation Square : it is a place with a statue created in 1995, to commemorate the anniversary of the liberation of Jersey on May 9th 1945.
After that, we went on the promenade by the harbour called the “Language of Colours”. There are stones with a coded alphabet used for radio communication, with international references, like S for Sierra, O for Oscar, D for Delta.
After we went to the Visitor Center to ask and take brochures about Jersey and St Helier.
Then, we went to the Fish Market but all the shops were closed, so we couldn’t observe the local fish. We also discovered the Food Market where we can buy all what we want : food, candy, books, flowers, cheese, pastries, souvenirs, meat, fruit, vegetables or even engine oil !

It was time for lunch, so we headed towards Howard Davis Park, where we had our sandwiches in a sunny and quiet place. But there were many seagulls flying over us and they tried to steal our food !
We then went to the beach where we had good fun : we climbed on the rocks like little goats and Mrs Leroux was very stressed out about it ! We also put our feet in the sea but it was very cold ;-)
In the morning, we didn’t have time to visit the cemetery where we passed by going back to the city center. It was a desolate place which gave the impression it was an abandoned place.
Back to the city center, we interviewed people in the streets and they answered our questions.
We ended the day with a Jersey dairy ice-cream before going back to the harbour to take the boat back to France.
